2024-25 Nottinghamshire Blitz Championship

An amazing entry of 57 players took part in the event, last held in 2009. There were 5 rounds with a time control of 7’ + 2’’ increments. It was an exciting tournament played in a great spirit.

After 3 rounds 5 players were on 3 points. In round 4 Chris Cantrill beat top seed and newly crowned Nottinghamshire County Champion Alexandr Klimchik, and Mike Naylor-Eade, after defeating ‘defending champion’ Drag Sudar in round 3, beat Jon Tait, but the fifth player on 3 points, Richard Webster, could only draw with Alan Griffiths. Chris beat Mike in round 5 to become the new Nottinghamshire Blitz Champion with a perfect 5/5. Well done Chris.

Ewan Fewell drew in round 2 and won his next 3 games to finish in 2nd place on 4.5 points.

6 players ended up joint 3rd on 4 points. One, Frank Richmond, won the Junior prize and another, Alan Griffiths, won the Senior prize. There were numerous upsets. Including only results between players with published ratings (ignoring games involving players with estimated ratings), there were 20 wins by lower rated players and 13 draws, most of them involving a difference of more than 150 points in ratings.

Radcliffe & Bingham’s venue was excellent.

Many thanks to Stephen Humphreys, Stuart Humphreys (no relation), Simon Scott and Derek Padvis for their help in ensuring the event ran so smoothly. Many thanks also to all the players who supported this experimental event.
